Kanha To Pai Kaun Duhave Gaiya?

Kaun duhave gaiya, Kanha topai kaun duhave gaiya?

(Oh Kanhaiya! Who is going to have You milk their cow?)

Thakurji (little Krishna) used to go to the house of Gopis.  This was a daily routine and He used to beg and plead,  “O Gopi! Have Me milk your cow. I will milk your cow.  You don’t need to work so hard.”  All the Gopis had a meeting and they all decided that they should tease Lala (little Krishna).  So, today when Thakurji went and said, “Have Me milk your cow,”  all the Gopisrefused.  “I don’t need Your help to milk my cow.  I will do it myself.”
Kanhaiya was taken by surprise as to what could have happened?  The Gopis said, “Listen to the reasons.”

Karo rang aru kari kamariya, bidak jayagi gaiya.
(Seeing Your dark complexion and Your black blanket, the cow will jump back.)

The color of Your body is black and You wear a black blanket; (seeing that,) the cow will jump back, will be scared and therefore, will not give milk. 

The second reason is,

Man kahun aur chitta kahun aur, dhar parai algaiya.
Kanha to pai kaun duhave gaiya?
(Your mind and Your attention would be someplace else and so the flow of the milk will go somewhere else.)

“During the milking process, it is important to make sure that the milk coming from the udder of the cow comes directly into the milk pot.  However, Your mind is naughty and mischievous.  You think something different and do something different.  So when the milk will flow onto the ground, then we won’t get enough milk.” 

The third reason is,

Adho dudh jaya matuki mah, adho gatkaiya.
(Half the milk will end up in the pot and half will end up in your stomach.)

“When You milk the cow, half goes into the milk pot and the other half goes into Your tummy.”
Kripaluji Maharaj says, “How will it go into the stomach when the Gopi is sitting, watching?  (O Kanhaiya!) You are very clever aren’t You?  You slanted the teat of the cow and pointed it toward Your mouth and the milk went directly into Your mouth.” 

Suni suni vyang bachan sakhiyan ke, kanha muhn latkaiya.
(Upon hearing such remarks from the Gopis, Kanha’s little face dropped.)

Kripaluji Maharaj says, “Now Thakurji became extremely heartbroken.” “I left My Golok abode to come to this material world and I am being deprived of seva.  Serving devotees makes Me so very happy.  Who knows this but Myself?”  Not allowing Krishna to milk their cows wasn’t the real motivation of Gopis’ hearts.  The desire of their hearts was that Krishna ‘should’ come to their house in the morning.

When small children cry, but before they really cry, their little mouths have a strange expression.  Their lower lip wiggles in an up and down motion.  And after that – “hun-vaaaa”, they burst out crying.  So now Krishna is showing signs of crying.  In other words, the initial expression has appeared on His little face, but He is not yet crying out loudly.

Kanha ki ya muhn latkani pai, sakhiyan bali bali jaiyan.
(Seeing Krishna with a long face, the Gopis’ hearts are overwhelmed with bliss.)

The demeanor of Krishna that appears before crying, where the lower lip flutters is exactly the vision of little Krishna that the Gopis wished to have.

Ko na duhave gaiya, Lala to pai ko na duhave gaiya?
(O Kanha! Who wouldn’t want You to milk their cow?)

Now Thakurji has started weeping loudly.  Just then, Kripaluji Maharaj said, “This is a terrible thing.  It is not a good idea to tease so much.  Teasing, joking should have a limit.  When it crosses the limit, then it turns into sadness.  All the charm gets lost.”

Thus, Kripaluji Maharaj said, “Why are You depressed, Lala?”  “No one is willing to let Me milk their cow.”  “O it’s not like that at all.  The Gopis are not saying, 'Kaun duhave gaiya? Who will have You milk their cow?'  What they are really saying is, 'Ko-na duhave gaiya? Oh Krishna! Who wouldn’t want You to milk their cow?'”
